Down is a shorter trip than back up.

Lose 30%, and it takes a 43% gain just to get even. Now add the part most calculators skip: you’re retired, and the account has to pay you every month while it climbs. Set your numbers and watch both recoveries — untouched, and while withdrawing.

What this does — and doesn’t

  • Break-even math is exact (gain = loss ÷ (1 − loss)). The recovery paths compound the chosen return yearly and subtract withdrawals monthly — a smooth illustration, not a market forecast; real markets recover in jagged lines.
  • No taxes, fees, dividends, or inflation. A steady return assumption flatters the withdrawal case — volatile recoveries with withdrawals are usually worse (sequence-of-returns risk).
  • Hear the whole idea: Difficult to Make Up Losses, and check what the essentials need in the gap checker.

Some money should never take that punch.

The floor that pays your essentials shouldn’t have to climb out of any hole — and once it doesn’t, the rest of your money can recover on its own schedule. Deciding how much belongs on that floor is the conversation.
