The paycheck stops · the bills don’t

What does the first of the month look like?

The most important number in retirement isn’t what your savings are worth — it’s what arrives every month versus what has to go out. Itemize both sides, see the gap — then flip the switch most couples never flip: what the picture looks like for whoever is left.

What this does — and doesn’t

  • “Essentials” means bills that arrive whether markets cooperate or not. Mark each income source as Social Security or not — the survivor picture depends on it (the survivor keeps the larger SS check; pension survivor options vary and are kept as-entered here).
  • No inflation, taxes, or COLAs modeled. A real income map layers those in — this shows the shape.
  • Next steps: sort the whole picture in Give Every Dollar a Job, or see how claiming age moves the SS rows in the timing explorer.

A gap has one honest fix: a plan for it.

Dave’s office builds a month-by-month picture of where income comes from once the paycheck stops — both spouses, both lifetimes. Fifteen minutes tells you a lot.
