The IRS has a withdrawal schedule for you.

At 73 or 75, withdrawals from pre-tax accounts stop being optional — and they grow every year whether you need the money or not. See your start age, your first deadline, and the curve of forced withdrawals ahead. The years before that first deadline are where the tax bill actually gets decided.

What this does — and doesn’t

  • Start ages per SECURE 2.0: born 1951–1959 → 73; born 1960 or later → 75; born 1950 or earlier → RMDs already run under the old rules. Amounts use the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table on a year-end balance grown at your chosen rate.
  • A projection, not a prediction: growth won’t be smooth, tables get updated, and spouses more than 10 years younger use a different table. Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMDs; inherited accounts have their own rules.
  • Not tax advice — IRS Publication 590-B is the rulebook. The first RMD can be delayed to April 1 of the following year, which stacks two taxable withdrawals into one year.

The RMD date is set. The tax bill isn’t.

Which account pays first, what moves before the deadline year, how required income stacks with Social Security — those are choices while the window is open. Walk through them in order, nothing decided until you understand it.
