Medicare runs on deadlines. Know yours.

Enter your birth month and Medicare hands you a personal calendar: a seven-month starting window, an annual tune-up season every fall, and penalties that never leave if you miss the door. This page turns the rulebook into your dates.

The late-enrollment penalty, in dollars

Part B’s penalty is 10% for each full year you were eligible but not enrolled (and not covered by an employer plan) — and it lasts for life.

What this does — and doesn’t

  • Educational only — this page doesn’t recommend, compare, or sell any Medicare plan. medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE are the official resources; Michigan’s free MMAP counselors (1-800-803-7174) are excellent too.
  • Penalty math shown is Part B’s (10% per full 12-month gap, for life, on top of whatever the premium is each year). Part D has its own smaller-but-lifelong penalty. Employer coverage while working usually pauses the clock — the “usually” is worth confirming.
  • Special Enrollment Periods exist (moving, losing employer coverage, and more) — the windows here are the standard ones.

Premiums are a bill. Bills belong in the income plan.

Medicare choices are yours (and medicare.gov’s). Making sure the premiums, deductibles, and surprises are paid by dependable income — that’s the part Dave’s office helps with, every autumn.
