Plan for the long life · not the average one

How long does the money have to last?

Averages mislead: half of people outlive them, and plans built for the average run out on exactly those people. Set your ages and see the real curve — and the planning age where the odds say your income should still be showing up.

What this does — and doesn’t

  • Curves come from the U.S. life tables (National Center for Health Statistics, 2021): the chance a person your age reaches each later age. “Either of you” assumes independent lifetimes.
  • These are population odds. Health, family history, and habits move your personal curve — and 2021 tables reflect a pandemic year, so true odds today run a touch better, not worse.
  • The claiming decision and the long life are one problem: the timing explorer shows which claiming age wins if you’re on the long side of these curves.

A long life should be good news.

It only feels like a math problem when income has an end date. Planning for the thirty-year retirement — income that lasts as long as you do — is what Dave’s office does across the table.
